Bar Exam Prep Apps

When it comes to iPhone / iPad bar exam apps, there are not that many to choose from.  See for yourself:

While the app is free on iTunes and anyone can download it, you will get the full access to the plethora of very useful studying materials only if you are enrolled with Barbri prep course.  The app allows students enrolled in the program to access lectures, questions, and outlines to prepare for the bar exam.  Saves you tons of room in your backpack for not having to carry the books and lecture materials.  Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Designed for iPhone.  See links to app store below the descriptions.

  • Lectures - Not only you can download text and audio of the lectures (from within the app) - you can also watch the Barbri recorded lectures on your iPhone. 
  • Practice Questions - You can practice your MBE questions anywhere using this app.   All of your time that you are forced to waste whether in the line at the Starbucks, on your way to school, waiting for the kettle to boil - all that prescious time you can study for your Bar Exam.  It just makes sense to take as many practice questions as you can - most of your bar exam success depends on it!  You can chose questions either by subject with or without timer or you can take a 30-minute practice exam with questions in a mixed order.  When you chose your multiple choice answer the app instantly lets you know whether you are right or wrong and gives explanations why right answer is right and why every wrong answer is wrong.  The app even lets you build up a set of questions that you indicate along the way that you would like to revisit by clickin a "review" switch.  Moreover, the explanations include hyperlinks to the outlines of the subject.  The app also keeps track percentage of the questions you answered correctly for each MBE subject, including subtopics!
  • Mini Reviews - the app comes with condensed outlines for each subject.
  • Barbri Challange - this is a FREE feature that comes with the app (you don't have to be enrolled with Barbri to use it) - Once you tell the app which school you attend(ed) the app gives you ten random questions.  Just like the practice questions, the app gives you explanations to both correct and wrong multiple choice answers.
  • Pros - Great app, saves lots of time and lots of effort carrying dozens of books.
  • Cons - Although the app is free, you need to be enrolled in the Barbri course.  Another drawback - you can only register 1 device.  And the last one - this is the iPhone App.  Although it will work on iPad, you will have to sacrifice quality when you use 2x view.

BarMax Bar Exam Prep Course
$999.99

Developed by Harward lawyers this app comes in two versions - New York and California (you will have to pay $999.99 for each).  Should you in an unlikely scenario be preparing for both NY and CA bar exam, i would recommend contacting BarMax with an inquiry as to the combined cost - after all, both of them have MBE exam prep.  Both apps come in two versions as well - iPhone and iPad.  The app is designed for a two-month prep course and is loaded with good stuff.  Welcome package includes all materials in MS Word format and hard copy printout option.

  • Lectures - 2 months of lectures - Outlines and Audio.  The app will keep playing the audio even when you leave the app in iOS4.  Lectures cover all MBE and NY or CA bar exam subjects.  BarMax will email you 'skeleton' outlines for note taking.
  • Essays - the app comes with over a hundred REAL practice NY or CA essay questions with two sample answers for each.
  • Performance Tests (CA only) - the CA app includes 20 REAL practice CA performance tests with two sample answers for each.
  • REAL MBE Questions - the app includes 1,371 REAL practice MBE questions from previous exams.  The answers are categorized by subject.
  • Flash Cards - the app also includes flashcards categorized for each subject (800 CA, 1,000 NY).  Great way to utilize your spare time going through the flash cards.
  • BarMax Calendar, included in the app, will guide you through the 2-month program
  • Pros - Great way to study for bar exam on your own.  You can't beat practicing real MBE questions from the previous bar exam.  For those without an iPod - you have an option to purchase the app with iPad included for $1,500.  Or if you decide to go with the iPhone BarMax app - BarMax will ship you an iPod Touch as part of your package.  Increadible same day (according to a number of reviews) email support.
  • Cons - Other than the size of the app (close to 1GB), there are really none, except maybe for the price tag.  And even that is at least questionable.  Think about it - if you haven't locked yourself in with Barbri or any other bar review prep course, this app comes at a bargain price if you compare it with Barbri's $3,000+ price tag.  So, if you haven't locked yourself in with Barbri - go for BarMax.  Otherwise, unless you are sitting on a pot of gold or have an offer from a BIG law and can afford another $1,000 - stick with Barbri.

  Fastcase app lets you search case law and statutes.  The free mobile law library saves your search history and lets you save documents as well.  According to Fastcase, the applications contain cases and statutes from all 50 states and from the federal government, which you can research by citation, keyword in Boolean or natural language, or browse statute collection.  Designed for both iPhone and iPad.

In this application by PDA Wizard you will find the full text of the New York Civil Practice Laws and Rules in a format that is easily readable and searchable.  No network connection is required so you will always have it handy if you find yourself in the older courtrooms without WiFi and 3G.  

Be aware – you may have to pay again for the next edition of the app when the rules are revised.  When PDA Wizard came out with the 2011 CPLR not only they raised the price (my 2009 CPLR app was $6.99 and updated for free for the 2010), they also haven’t offered an upgrade.  I would have to purchase the 2011 all over again.  Here is part of the PDA Wizard’s response to my inquiry:  “Unfortunately the app store does not currently provide a way for us to give a discount to current users.  In fact we do not receive any information to identify who purchases our apps.  We are expecting this to change soon, but unfortunately not in time for our 2011 releases.”  So, stay tuned.  To learn more about NY CPLR app, click here.

Perfect app for those who want to stay in shape but don't have much free time.  This app has a variety of work out routine.  You can also create you own workouts.  The app also lets you track of your exercises and routines.  If you forget how much you bench pressed or how many sit-ups you did last time because it's been so long since you've seen the inside of a gym, the app will store all this information in an easy to use, at the tip of your finger interface.
Most of the exercises are accompanied by a video.  Well worth the money.
